Can addiction be understood purely within biological terms?

Discuss biological and non-biological factors thought to underpin substance use and abuse2000-2500 words (not counting reference section) (no less than 2000 words)

– APA Citations and should use around 20-30 references

Define addiction in terms of the key symptoms (do not need a full DSM breakdown); highlight the symptoms/aspects of addiction which will link to the biology (or act as evidence against) rather than an in depth description of addiction. This is not a mental health essay!

  • – What are the main biological theories thought to cause addiction
    • – Substance disruption of reward circuits/dopamine pathways
    • – Genetic predisposition to addiction? – Others?
  • – Do these neural mechanisms explain why people use and abuse substances?
  • – What evidence is there for other psychosocial factors in either causing or maintaining addiction

– So weigh up these two lines and decide whether addiction as a whole disorder is explained by biology or only some aspects or only some addictions or something else moderates

I have also attached an example of a good essay and an essay requirement document. Please use it for reference!
