I’m working on a writing discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
Joan Didion, “Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream,” from: Slouching Towards Bethlehem (2001), pp. 3-25.
1. Didion’s essay is a classic example of true crime reportage from the mid-1960s. discuss what, if any, elements of her essay (character tropes, the setting, the tone, the diction) fit into the Noir genre.
2. Compare and contrast Didion’s portrayal of mid-century San Bernardino with Nina Revoyr’s portrayal of the mid-century Angeles Mesa (modern day SouthCentral) in her novel’s prologue. How are their portrayals of place, different? How are they the same? To answer this question fully, I would urge you to think about the promise of the California Dream, and its reality.
