California State University Shadowing of Nursing Student Recommendation Letter

Provide a written sample of a recommendation letter.

Objective: To be written from a personal perspective of a Dr. specializing in, and currently practicing in the field of Neurology at an outpatient patient clinic.

What to include:

  • Date letter was written
  • Provide explanation of the relationship: i.e. : student was shadowing me from december 2019 to june 2020, observing during patient visits, assessments, etc.
  • Lists accomplishments of the individual that provides context
  • Contributions the individual can make to the nursing and patients
  • Unique characteristics such as bedside manners; credentials
  • Results of their prior work/shadowing process of student
  • Information regarding their collaborative relationships with the Dr’s in the clinic, nurses, physician assistants
  • Reasons the individual will succeed

Performance and skills can vary from being on time, to the confirmation that the student is competent and has a good understanding the neurologic disorders, assessments, interventions on a BSN, RN level. You may or may not find it necessary to include the following I just listed in the letter, they are provided as examples. Please proceed to adding on any information you may deem fit.

Aim for the LOC to provide specific examples or instances, it should sound personal and non-repetitive. Avoid Cliche’s.
