Writing Project Two: Arguing for Speech
Introduction: The readings from this unit explore free speech within postsecondary institutions (colleges). Postsecondary institutions have adopted varying positions on how to best promote academic debate, discussion, and even disagreement while simultaneously protecting the safety and security of all students. Although many solutions have been proposed and attempted, the issue remains unresolved.
Assignment: For this writing assignment, you will argue what policy should govern free speech within postsecondary institutions and explain how this policy will benefit students. To identify and support your policy position, you will need to develop a thorough understanding of the topic through the selected course readings and academic research. As you construct your argument, be sure to consistently address how your policy position best serves the needs of all students.
Questions for Getting Started:
In what ways is freedom of speech valuable to academic learning?
Under what circumstances might it be acceptable to limit freedom of speech?
How might freedom of speech harm certain subgroups?
What are the needs of students within postsecondary institutions?
Are safe spaces and trigger warnings acceptable compromises to free speech?
