- Choose one research subject (I strongly recommend a classmate, parent, friend, or partner – NO clients or children).
- Choose one small thing they want to change (reduce stress, lose weight, improve timeliness, etc. – NO major depression, significant trauma, etc.) – this is the dependent variable.
- Choose one potential intervention to affect change (nothing life-threatening, please) – this is the independent variable.
- Measure their baseline dependent variable (e.g. stress) for 3-4 times without any intervention
- Implement the intervention (e.g. lavender on their pillow at night), continue to measure their dependent variable (still stress) for an additional 3-4 times (usually days or weeks)
- Write up your results. Viola! You just completed a small research study!
The write up will be a 7-9 page (double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font) “Single Case Evaluation Paper” that includes: Title Page; Abstract; Introduction; Literature Review; Method; Results; Discussion; Personal Experience; and References. This is a formal research paper and should look like published empirical journal articles (with the exception of the “personal experience” section at the end of the paper).
