BUS 221 EGCC Lesson 11 Drug Test and Ethical Arguments Discussion Responses

2-3 paragraph response. Describe two distinct reasons why someone who has never used a drug in his or her life might refuse a test at work. Convert those reasons into well-founded ethical arguments.

The federal government and most states allow for drug testing to be done during the hiring process and allow testing on existing employees if there is suspicion of substance abuse to continue employment.

Two distinct reasons as to why an employee who has never used a drug in their life might refuse a drug test at work would be an employee might feel like they are being singled out from the rest of their co workers or an employee might feel that it is an invasion of privacy.

Many people do not like to mix home life and work life, and they tend to keep to themselves. Another reason as to why an employee might refuse a drug test is because they have been prescribed a medication for a mental illness and this will then notify an employer of a preexisting condition and allow for judgment to be passed. Many people fear that they might lose their job because they are being sent for a random drug test. Companies have become very strict on their drug policies and even the common over the counter cold medicine can impair your judgment and possibly get you into trouble.

One reason I can see someone refusing is some of their medication coming back as an illegal substance. Many of us have a need to take a treatment or a prescription that potential employers could look down on. In most circumstances, the proper documentation can get you a wavier but it would be an awkward situation to bring up in a job interview.

Another reason I can see is a person could fear the test could come back false positive. The chance of it happening may be small but the chance of it happening is still possible. Good jobs only come along so often and this could make someone fear the possibly of something going wrong.
