Building an Online Learning Community

Closely review Building community in the online classroom (Thomas, 2012).  Dr. Thomas outlines a model similar to the PARS model in which she suggests online instructors should first provide structure in the form of organized tasks and assignments, and then work toward community building and socialization once students are familiar with the environment.

In this document, Thomas contrasts the perspectives of the instructor with those of the students when considering community and relationship building and describes several Essential Elements of Community (below).

As you examine the document, consider the elements of community and how you would integrate these into the class you are developing for your Final Assignment. Identify at least three essential elements of community and describe your ideas in detail for how you would apply them either through course design or through course delivery.

Essential Elements of Community

  • Interdependence among members
  • Sense of belonging/connectedness
  • Recognition of membership
  • Trust/credibility in others and activities
  • Interaction based on tasks
  • Common expectations
  • Shared values and goals
  • Overlapping histories among members
