I’m working on a literature writing question and need guidance to help me understand better.
Please review Wordsworth’s poem and the slides related to Romanticism before you respond.
Wordsworth’s Romantic view of childhood puts forward the notion that each human being is most uniquely themselves in infancy and early childhood, but as the human being grows older he/she loses uniqueness as they “con another part,” changing as they adapt to the expectations of others. Although Wordsworth thought this process inevitable and irreversible, he clearly believed a person should try to retain some of original child-like “intimations of immortality” by recollecting childhood experience.
Do you see any examples in contemporary American thinking about childhood that shares Wordsworth’s views on childhood? Is there a place for or respect for the Romantic Child in our world?
