Those who have family and friends support are more likely to be successful in substance abuse   treatment

Successful in treatment for substance abuse

Null Hypothesis (Ho)

There is no relation between the ability to finish substance abuse treatment programs and childcare.

 

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)

Having stable care for your child is associated with a   greater likelihood of finishing substance abuse treatment. 

 

Independent Variable 

Having stable care for your child/children (Y/N )

 

Dependent Variable 

Rating of how likely it is that you would complete  the treatment program knowing your child/children are in a stable situation (highly   likely, somewhat likely, not at all likely)

 

Hypothesis 3

 

Null Hypothesis (Ho)

There is no relation between family support and substance   abuse treatment success. 

 

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha)

Family support is associated with successful treatment for   substance abusers.

 

Independent Variable 

Family supports available (Y/N )

 

Dependent Variable 

Rating of how likely you would stay complete  treatment with the support of your   family (highly likely, somewhat likely, not at all likely)

[MW1]Be consistent in how you characterize your variables in the null and alternative hypotheses and in the description of the variable.

Having supports – yes or no – is probably too simple since there are many different people who might be supportive and many different ways in which support can be provided. Think about what you want to capture. You do this more in hypothesis 2 – having stable CC can be a support.

[MW2]Define this. In hyp 2 you mention completion of t drug treatment program. That is measurable. What else would be an indicator of success – not missing appointment or treatment sessions, completing tasks (e.g., journaling) related to treatment, etc.

[MW3]You will need to define stable CC for the respondents.

[MW4]I think you are asking about whether a person finished or not, not how likely they are to finish.

[MW5]You will need to define family supports and create questions that respondents can answer. Not all family supports are the same – some may be supportive and others mot. 

[MW6]Do you mean stay to completion

 The questionnaire is designed to gather the data about your three hypotheses – i.e., to measure each of the variables in the hypotheses. You will have a group of questions that measure each of your variables, INDIVIDUALLY. You could also have additional questions that add to your understanding of the study focus, such as demographic questions, or other questions that further inform your understanding of the phenomenon you are studying.
