1) View the videos in “Introduction to World Literature – The Odyssey” and “Introduction to The Odyssey” in the current course unit. Which was most useful to you in understanding and analyzing The Odyssey? Why? Use specific information, names of experts when discussion “Into to World Lit.” Use details and quotes. NOTE: Also, use an appropriate quote from the BOOK referenced by the video, one of the experts, etc.
2) Read the section in the Introduction to the edition we are using on pp. 23-29, titled “Friends, Strangers, Guests.” How does this passage, written by the translator Emily Wilson, help you understand the theme of hospitality in the story? Then, move on to any of the passages involving Penelope at home with the suitors, and analyze the suitors’ behavior and the whole situation with them regarding hospitality.
