Playwriting Assignment
1. Write a two-page play (typed, double-spaced)
2. Use exactly 2 characters
–No more, no less (and no narrator) –Can have off stage characters
3. Either the setting must take place in a different time and/or place than our own OR it must involve some kind of social / economic / political issue. The play must observe the Aristotelian “Unities”: it can only have one scene (in one location, and time must move at the same rate for the characters and the audience).
How to write a 2-character play
- Choose 2 characters and some kind of conflict. Remember, CONFLICT=DISAGREEMENT.(and make your conflict a REAL disagreement, something that matters—not just whose football team is better, or what to eat for lunch). If you have a good conflict, the play will write itself
- Decide who speaks first
- Use dramatic format, e.g.:Tom: What are you doing here?
Beth: (revealing the letter) What do you think?
Tom: Okay, this has—
Beth: No. This is going to end here and it’s going to end now.
