After watching Before the Flood and completing the Before the Flood Pre-screening & Screening Activities, complete the following:
- In 2-3 paragraphs (~400-600 words) create an analytical response that:
- Introduces the film, the filmmaker & narrator, discusses the filmmakers’ overall argumentative purpose, and intended audience
- Identifies and analyzes at least 2 major claims made throughout the film and evaluates how the filmmakers use rhetorical appeals and rhetorical strategies to support their claims. Your response should be supported with at least 2 direct quotations, paraphrase or summary with proper citations from the film in each paragraph
- Avoid simply naming the appeals — logos, pathos, ethos — in your response. Your task here is to discuss HOW they work by analyzing the rhetorical strategies used to achieve the appeals.
- You should not use “I”. When you discuss how the appeals work, focus on the viewer or audience reaction.
Please be sure to properly introduce/integrate & cite any quotations used using MLA format.
- Review “Writing Resources” -> “Integrating Quotations,” “Summary vs. Paraphrase” & “Summary, Paraphrase & Quoting”
- Review “MLA: In-text Citations: The Basics” -> “Time-based media sources for proper in-text citations.
- Please note: Netflix calculates time backwards (showing time left, not time lapsed). The citations must be in time lapsed, (start time – end time) for any paraphrase, summary or direct quotation use from the film.
