Baton Rouge College Managing Different Types of Professors Discussion

You’re about to embark on a new semester with new professors and new pitfalls. How will you manage the different professors in your life? Some of them will be rude, unforgiving, and harsh; others may be cheesy, annoying, and bad with email; and of course, you may get lucky and get a kind, understanding, and inspirational professor as well. In this paper, you will take one category—professors—and describe 3 different types of them. And you will follow up those category types with advice to other students (and yourselves) about how to succeed with those types of educators. Think of this paper as a mixture between description and instruction. First, what are the signs that you should look out for? For example, how would an incoming student recognize that they have a cheesy professor? Give examples and describe what that would be like. Then, in a new paragraph what should incoming freshman do in order to get in their good graces? Should they make sure to go to office hours and take better notes or should they run for the hills immediately? Put into writing what you wish someone had told you. And, remember, everyone doesn’t need the exact same advice; offer multiple options for success.

This paper will be a kind of warm up for the more difficult ones that will follow. With this paper, you will practice how to structure an effective introduction and conclusion, and integrate examples that demonstrate your experience with the professors. You’ll follow up each descriptive paragraph with a shorter paragraph that gives some advice to students who may not know how to deal with such challenges. This means that your whole paper will consist of 8 paragraphs, rather than the usual 5. In this way, the paper will not be a traditional 5-paragraph essay, but it will follow many of the same rules and expectations. We will spend time working through the structure. Your main focus should be on what types of professors you want to discuss and the kinds of examples and descriptions you’re going to use to explain their methods.

THESIS: This should be fairly straightforward. Your thesis (the last sentence of your introduction) should name the three types of professors you will describe. Pick these strategically based on your experiences and the evidence or examples you can provide. Something like this will work: Incoming students have to adapt to the disorganized, bad with technology, and caring professor in order to succeed in college.

OR: If students want to succeed in college, they need to be ready for late, strict, and joking professors.

The rest of your intro should explain how important it is to adapt to your professors.

DESCRIPTIVE BODY PARAGRAPHS: Each body paragraph will start with a topic sentence that clearly states what type of professor you will be discussing. Your topic sentences also need a clear transition.

For example: To begin, new students will definitely have to learn to deal with professors that never respond to emails.

You’ll then need to describe what it is like to be in a classroom with that kind of professor and how new students can recognize them, so they’re prepared to work around them. You can use yourself as examples, but you can also speak more generally about what takes place in different kinds of classrooms.

FOLLOW UP ADVICE PARAGRAPHSwill also need topic sentences with transitions, but they will vary based on the advice you intend to give. It might be something like: When you find that you have a non-communicative professor, the most important thing to do is remain calm. Then the rest of the paragraph can give advice about how to be patient and how to force your professor to talk to you!

OTHER SUGGESTIONS:

  • Look at the examples in the textbook (on moodle). They are organized very well and are good models.
  • Pick three distinctly different types of professors. The less they overlap, the better your paragraphs will be.
  • Use hypothetical or general examples, along with your own personal examples. Find a balance between the two.
  • Give genuine advice. Pretend that I am going to give this to incoming freshman. Actually try your best to help them out.

YOU WILL BE GRADED ON:

  • 3-4 pages 400 -500 words work cited double spaced
  • A strong thesis that names the three types of professors you’ll be discussing.
  • An introduction that moves from broad to specific and discusses the importance of working with different types of professors.
  • Topic sentences that make an argument, have a transition and clearly state what you will focus on in the paragraph. Your paragraphs should not stray from whatever is in the topic sentence.
  • Detailed descriptions of each type of professor.
  • At least one example within each description paragraph.
  • Relevant and important advice about how to constructively deal with various kinds of professors. You may use examples here as well.
  • A conclusion that considers the importance of your descriptions and advice.
  • MLA formatting
  • Grammar
  • Assignments turned in on time
  • give advice on what to do with  professor
