Choose one of the prompts that are given below. Give a clear thesis statement in the first paragraph of your essay (introductory paragraph) and develop your thesis in the following paragraphs with supporting ideas from course readings/films. End your essay with a concluding paragraph that sums up your ideas and restates your thesis statement. Make sure the essay has an original title.

Your essay should be 6 pages total (double space), not including the bibliography. Be sure to include a bibliography page, which should start on a new page. Be sure to cite your sources properly. Use the rubric as a checklist to make sure you have all the components required in the essay. Use the Chicago Manual of Style for citation (notes & bibliography style).

  • Prompt #1: Compare (and contrast) two or more films/ theories/ music videos we have seen in class so far. Taken together, what do these works reveal about Asian masculinities? You may discuss one specific masculinity represented in the readings (films, theories and music videos) or juxtapose two or more masculinity performances represented in the readings.
  • Prompt #2: How can we define masculinities? Why is it so important to talk about masculinity? You may discuss your personal opinions but be sure to back up your arguments with evidence from different texts (scholarly and/or literary) that we have read/watched in this class.
  • Prompt #3: Choose one of the questions you raised in one of your reaction papers. Further develop that question, and answer that question based on the texts we have discussed in this class. (If you choose this option, make sure you should remain within the gender/sexuality topics)
