I need an explanation for this Poetry question to help me study.
This project will have you present your words in an environment where they are unexpected, some sort of public space not normally used for poetry. You don’t have to wait for your poetry to be validated by a publisher; you can publish, that is put your work out into the public in many other ways on your own.
Some simple rules.
- Your words must go out into the physical not virtual public, e.g., someplace in the town, not on the Internet or social media.
- Your words, in this case, should have some message you’d like to get out to the public. It could be a political, social-justice, or community-oriented message or something else. What do you wish people would consider? Your words for this project should be specifically created for it, not regurgitated from other prompts. The text can be any length you like.
- Don’t do anything that will get you arrested and/or me in trouble with the dean. No spray-painting buildings with your poetry, for example.
- You must document your project with photography or video, depending on whether your words are stationary (e.g., a hand- printed poster) or moving in time (e.g., you stand on a street corner, reciting your poetry).
- You must write a synopsis of your project in which you explain what you did, why you chose to do it that way in that space, and what conclusions you came to about putting your text into the public space in that way. Turn in the photo(s)/video with your synopsis in the space provided.
There are countless possibilities for how you might go about this project, including but not limited to printing or drawing your poetry on posters, booklets, pamphlets, postcards, etc, and distributing them; writing your poetry in chalk on streets or sidewalks or with erase markers on white boards or painting on rocks to distribute; painting your text on a t-shirt and wearing it around all day; recording your poetry and broadcasting it in some public space; speaking your poetry in public to passers-by; including your poetry in text that is usually used for other purposes. The possible list could go on and on.
This assignment is worth 10% of your total grade and will be graded on effort put into the assignment and the power of the final product.
Let me know if you have any questions.
