This activity will continue your “Global Business Plan” by giving you the opportunity to begin researching your company’s expansion to your Country of Study. At this time, you should have already selected a Country for expansion, within an emerging region. This week, you should also identify a key city within that country.
Assignment:
In Section C, you will complete a competitive analysis and an entry strategy for your company and the country of study.
Section C – Competitive Analysis & Entry Strategy
- Conduct a Competitive Analysis, identifying business competitors located within your Country of Study. Keep in mind that competitors may be other multinational companies, or local companies offering both direct and indirect competition. For example, if you are expanding Chick-Fil-A, your competitors might be: KFC, McDonald’s, and numerous local food stalls and restaurants (where food may be priced significantly lower than Western fare). The key question you should ask yourself is, “What makes or breaks your company’s success in a country?” Explore and research the track record of other companies already located in that country. Evaluate the reasons that other companies are successful in that country.
- Develop an Entry Strategy, based on last week’s textbook reading in Chapter 12: “Strategies for Analyzing and Entering Foreign Markets.” The chart on page 340 summarizes the main entry strategies, including: Exporting, Licensing, Franchising, Specialized Modes (Contract Manufacturing, Management Contracts, Turnkey Projects), and FDI – Foreign Direct Investment – (Greenfield Strategy, Acquisitions, Joint Ventures). Consider whether your company may need to explore possible strategic alliances or partnerships to help them get started in the new country.
