For this week, I asked you to watch TV news reports that covered the three migration crises that help lead to the Refugee Act of 1980. Each provides a primary source on public perception of this historically large wave of refugees to the US. Please respond to the following questions after doing your your viewing:
- How well do you think the TV news captured the refugee and asylum crisis of the late 1970s and early 1980s? Was the coverage fair? (Keep in mind, the US legal standard of “well-founded fear of persecution.” that refugees must meet.)
- For the videos, what do you perceive as some of the practical problems of assessing asylum claims? (You don’t necessarily need a solution, but if you have one feel free to explain.)
In your response, please provide at least TWO specific examples from the primary source videos. Describe your examples, either what you see and/or what hear from the news reporters.
There is no need to any additional research. I am looking for your interpretation, not a summary of the sources or a summary of the refugee crisis or a long description of the Refugee Act of 1980. Doing so does not fulfil the requirements of the assignment and will be receive a reduced grade.
