1- An administrative crime analyst who oversees all crime analysis can be a very useful asset to the operations of a law enforcement agency. The role of a crime analyst Is to analyze all crime activity, as well as review progress of crime reduction and evaluation of current crime reduction strategies and efforts (Santos, 2017). A crime analyst is also responsible for communicating any crime analysis information to the law enforcement agency and its management leaders. This can be done on a adult, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis as a sort of information briefing sessions or meetings.

Crime analysis is done through a series of methods. One of the simplest, yet most effective is the use of crime maps. According to Chung (2019), crime analysis using maps can show law enforcement the degree of risks to their departments and cities, and it allows them to make well informative decision on their operations and strategies such as proper resource allocation. For example, if crime is high is high in one area, a crime analyst can relay this information to the law enforcement agency, and they can then in turn start working on a strategy to find the nature of the crime and in the meantime allocate additional patrol units to this area.

Crime analysts and the work they do is so effective that it is also used to predict crime. Crime changes with time, but through the use of crime analysis, future crime can be predicted. There is a team at Oxford that believes that the development of AI (artificial intelligence) will bring on new crimes. This team has used crime analysis in order to predict what those crimes will be and when they are likely to occur (King, 2020).

This role provides information to law enforcement about their crime operations, which helps keep the agency accountable for their crime reduction strategies. Every law enforcement agency is responsible for documenting crime as accurately as possible. Since the data that the analyst uses is based on the data that the agency documents, the analysis of data will only be as accurate as the data that is documented. Accountability for proper crime documentation is imperative because if an analyst is conducting crime analysis on crime data that is not accurate due to lack of proper documentation methods and practices, any strategies that are created around the crime analysis will not yield any real results. Even tough the role of a crime analysis is to analyze data and turn it into intelligent information that can be used to create strategies to reduce crime, the work of the analyst is only effective if the law enforcement agency is held accountable to the highest standards of proper crime documentation.

2- The role of an administrative crime analyst is to ensure the accountability process of the department police personnel are held responsible for implementing strategies that help reduce crime and disorder in the community. The importance of the accountability process is focused on creating realistic expectations, documenting the crime reduction activities, systematically reviewing the progress of crime reduction activities, and evaluating the success of crime reduction efforts at all levels (Boba Santos, 2017). This process is to make sure the agency implements and maintains crime reduction efforts consistently and effectively. This is done with an accountability structure and the creation of routine products that are used to identify problems and direct police resources, hold managers accountable for their effectiveness in crime reduction efforts and determine the effectiveness of the organizations.

Gilsinan (2012) expressed accountability and transparency are seen as reinforcing each other. Being held accountable assumes that one’s actions are available for review and critique. The implementation of accountability meetings will allow a formal structure for the department to include a list of attendees, a consistent plan, and standardized crime analysis products. That will be held daily, once a week, and once a month. The meetings will serve multiple purposes that are described with:

According to Sabel and Simon (2016), Administration has a duty and responsibility that consists of three elements. It requires that officials articulate reflectively the policies and principles that govern their work. It demands that they monitor the activities of peers and subordinates to induce compliance with these policies and regulations.

3- Since many police departments across the country are under a close microscope these days, many have turned to a more direct approach involving accountability in showing that they are trying to combat the crime problem currently being experienced. As previously studied, crime analysts are tasked with creating crime analysis products for their respective agencies in regards to potential action plans for crime reductions, various positioning of host spots throughout the jurisdiction, and any other requested information ascertainable from crime reports. With the new world of policing and accountability, many departments have begun asking for success indicator products from their crime analysts. According to Boba Santos in the textbook Crime Analysis and Crime Mapping, this specific type of crime analysis product is, “This component specifies the type of activity that is used to measure the impact of the crime reduction strategies. The purpose of this component is to denote the specific measurement relevant to the crime reduction goal” (2017, p. 456). Essentially, the department requests this type of product when they want to show the community that the crime reduction plans and strategic placement of resources are working properly. Command staff could utilize such a product when looking for more money from the city for hiring, equipment, etc. or when they simply are trying to show that their plans are working when the community is outraged by a growing crime wave. The products can be utilized just like other crime analysis products, showing results for a specific geographic area, whether it be a direct beat or an entire division, it is all dependent upon what the department requests.
