Introduction & Instructions:
Advances in neuroscience have helped us understand aspects of learning and cognition like never before. The field of affective neuroscience studies the relationship between the brain and emotions, and the content of this activity pays particular attention to the educational implications of recent research findings. Experts now proport that we can no longer think of “learning” and “emotions” as being separate from one another. Or in other words, students in the classroom build academic knowledge by integrating emotion and cognition in social contexts.
First, read the chapter provided for you. You will find special strategies for teachers outlined in the second part of the chapter.
Second, watch the short video from 2016 in which Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, one of the authors of the reading, presents a summary of these ideas at an Ed Talk at the American Educational Research Association.
Step 1. Read & Watch:

Please organize your response by the following:
- 3 Takeaways. What stood out to you when reviewing this material? List three direct quotes, nuggets, takeaways, impressions, or reactions you have. Provide citations when appropriate. For example: (Sousa, 2010, p. 12) or (Gonzalez, 2017, 4:32)
- 2 Classroom Connections. In what ways does this material relate to student learning in your classroom or content area? Provide two connections to the classroom. At least one of these must be directly related to student learning.
- 1 Course Content Connection. In what way does this material relate to our course content? Provide one connection to the course content and include a citation and page number. For example: (Ormrod, 2020, p. 145)
- 1 Question. Conclude your post by posing one question for your peers. This question should relate to the content of your post.
Step 3. Respond:
Choose one classmate’s post to read and respond.
