Assignment:
Write a 3-5 page revision in which you discuss current research in a science/technology topic set within our geographic region of the Western United States on the topic of Water.
Use evidence from 6-8 authoritative and current scholarly sources (1-2 of these may be non-scholarly news sources) to support an argumentative thesis (answer to a research question).
Use APA in-text citations (author & date). Rely on summary and paraphrase of source evidence and limit use of quotations.
Format:
Include a title page with title of essay, your name, instructor name, course, and date. Use headings to arrange your essay. Include visuals such as graphs, charts, maps, photographs, etc, to help reader comprehend topic. Provide a “Literature Cited” page that includes full citations in APA format.
Goals:
§Writer identifies a focused topic of current scientific interest.
§Writer identifies a problem: Why are scientists and researchers interested in the topic?
Writer must comprehend the topic and the Problem.
§Writer uses summary and paraphrase to explain to reader the topic and problem and current research. Writer limits use of quotations.
§Writer uses third person voice and phrases such as “Scientists believe. . . “, “Research suggests. . . “, and avoids personal pronouns such as I, you, we.
Ask:
What is the problem (how did topic come to prominence)?
What is being written about the problem (current research)?
What do researchers still need to find out about the problem (ongoing research)?
