Critical Analysis (3.5-4 pages, double spaced; citation list is outside the page count)
For this essay, you will be doing a critical analysis on any of the literary readings assigned for this class. The purpose of this assignment is to get you to move beyond the surface level meaning of a text and to analyze its deeper meaning.
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to-
- move beyond summarizing the essay/article
- assess or analyze what you read; agree/disagree; or do both with exceptions
- offer interpretations and judgments about what you read
- give evidence to support your evaluation
A Successful Essay:
- Will properly introduce the article and author
- Will provide a clear thesis that makes a claim about a story and uses evidence to support that claim
- Will thoroughly analyze a reading, not merely summarize it
- Will properly integrate evidence from the reading in MLA or APA format

Guidelines
EVALUATE the essay of your choice. Remember that the key is that you evaluate something that interests you, but also might matter to someone else.
- Mention the set of evaluation criteria you will use.
For example: a. What reasons do people have for making judgments about what you’re reviewing? Do some preliminary background research to be as specific and thorough as possible
Remember that, a review is an evaluation for an audience, so make sure your criteria is as evidence based and objective as you can make it to be. Your evidence comes from the article you chose.
Make your judgment base your evaluation criteria, do you think it’s good or bad, useful or not useful, relevant or not relevant, convincing or not convincing, worth doing or not worth doing – or perhaps somewhere in between, as you choose the one article you wish to review and evaluate?

- Facts from the text of the article
Important Facts about the Paper:
- 20 points, double spaced, uses citation page outside of the 3.5-4-page requirement.
- All pages are numbered, paper follows either MLA or APA citation (you only cite the one article you chose)
- Paper shows familiarity with the chosen article through examples and evidence in the form of direct quotes or paraphrases from that article
- Paper has a clear thesis statement in the form of the paper writer’s evaluation of the article chosen
