Read the assigned book What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20 (i.e.,WIW) by Tina Seelig and submit an eight-page report including failure resume (excluding coversheet and references) following the structure below:

  • Summarize the book and identify the key takeaways from it. You should also discuss which of these key takeaways resonated with you the most and clearly explain why. (5 pages)
  • Discuss how this book has enabled you to see yourself and the world through a new (different) lens. Specifically, you must discuss what have you attempted to do differently based on the insights/learning you gained from this book. (1 page)
  • Discuss the results of TWO of your self-assessments (crystalknows.com; info.lululemon.com/content/dam/lululemon/features/holiday/2015/VG_worksheet_2015.pdf;https://www.bdc.ca/en/articles-tools/entrepreneur-toolkit/business-assessments/pages/self-assessment-test-your-entrepreneurial-potential.aspx) in the context of the entrepreneurial skills highlighted in the book. What skills do you need to develop to achieve your goals that you want to set for the next ten years and what actions do you need to take to develop these skills? (1 page)
  • Finally, craft a resume that summarizes all your biggest screw ups- Personal, professional and academic. For every failure, each student must describe what he or she learned from that experience. (1 page or so).

Failure Resume Example:

Professional Failures

Not observing things as is: Early in my career I naively thought I knew how organizations worked. I made judgments about corporate culture that were incorrect. I wish I had spent more time observing people and behaviors and less time making judgements.I wish I had paid attentions to where the Internet industry in China was going at the time.

Not listening to my own likes and dislikes: At major junctions in my career, I listened more to others’ expectations of me and followed them without really examining whether they make me happy.I wish I had been confident enough to listen more to myself and really follow my own interest.I might still have come to make the same choices but with more buy-in.

Academic Failures

Not doing my best: The first time that I took the GRE test (a test for graduate school entrance in US and UK), I mistakenly overestimated my Math skills. I did not prepare enough for this subject. My overall score was poor and I ended up spending two more years to fully prepare for another Graduate entrance test.

Mismanaging Relations: I had a challenging relationship with my PhD advisor. I wanted to focus on organizational learning, and she felt I should spend most of my time on another topic: internationalization of small businesses. I wish I had found a way to better align our goals.

Personal Failures

Avoiding Conflicts: In my relationships, sometimes I have trouble voicing my preferences.Instead of telling others no when a situation arises, I let the pressure build until it had to blow off. The relationships broke. I wish I had been able to talk honestly about what was going on and say no earlier on.

Not having a creative outlet: I do not know how to draw or make music. When things are getting tough, the only outlet that I have is to exercise.I wish I have a more consistent creative outlet to work through the emotions.
