Assignment 1: Data and Information

In the Final Project scenario, you are the director of an Adult Learning Program at the One-Stop Community Education Center. You are responsible for developing a proposal on how a course that was discontinued should be reinstituted and improved. One important section of a good proposal is a discussion of the historical data and information in which you focus on the events that lead to the closing of the program and the reestablishment of that program.

For this Assignment:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the “Historical Data for Program Closure” document
  • Reflect on the important factors you need to consider when working with adult learners
  • Reflect on the data and information needed to prepare the proposal
  • Consider the course at the One-Stop Community Education Center that was discontinued

By Day 7

Submit a 1- to 2-page paper in which you describe the data and information of the One-Stop Community Education Center. Describe how, until recently, the Community Education Center offered an adult learning course in Computer Applications. Explain what you might have done to avoid having to discontinue the Computer Applications course. What strategies might you have implemented immediately?

Be sure to support your Assignment with specific references to the resources and other current literature in the Walden Library. The Assignment should follow 6th Edition APA Guidelines.

Historical Data for Program Closure

The One-Stop Community Center has been offering a Computer Applications course for adult learners. The course was scheduled once a week for each of the 3 proficiency levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. The curriculum was competency-based, and each student obtained a certificate upon completion of each course level. The competency-based approach and certification was designed to enhance computer skills and to assist adults when seeking employment at local companies. The computer lab was designed to accommodate 15 students. The students ranged in age from 22 – 75. The cultural identity of the students was varied and there were approximately 70% women and 30% men students in each class.

While most of the adult students were taking the Computer Applications course to aid in securing employment opportunities, some adult students took the course for their own personal enrichment. The Computer Applications class was so popular that there was often a waiting list for students interested in taking the course at all three levels.

The Computer Applications course has been offered by the One-Stop Community Center for the past 5 years. For the first 4 years, enrollment numbers were steady. Local employers commented that the certification was helpful information when hiring new workers. Employers also commented that the adult learners that were hired exhibited excellent computer applications skills. The adult learners’ course evaluations reflected that each student was enjoying the course, the instructor, and found the information learned meaningful and useful.

Starting in the fifth year, the student enrollments started declining. The students seemed less interested in taking the Computer Application course. There were several turnovers with instructors. Local employers contacted the One-Stop Community Center to find out if there were any adult learners who had completed the Computer Applications course. The employers needed workers certified in Computer Applications. The training coordinator informed the employers that enrollment in the course had been declining and efforts were being taken to recruit new students.

Throughout the fifth year, the course schedule changed. The Computer Application classes were being offered twice a month, and then only once a month. Finally, due to very low enrollments and course evaluations reflecting student dissatisfaction, the Computer Applications course was no longer offered at the One-Stop Community Center at all.
