Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

 Final Paper Topic [WLOs: 2, 3, 4, 5] [CLOs: 2, 3, 4, 5]

Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, review the Narrowing a Topic and Developing a Research Question (Links to an external site.) web page and Integrating Research (Links to an external site.) tutorial. These resources will help you in developing a topic.

It is also recommended that you review these tutorials from the Ashford University Library:

You may also want to review the Sample Final Paper GEN499 svg icon download download, so that you can start preparing your rough draft that is due in Week 4.

Reflect: When considering a research topic, consider an interesting topic that is worth further research. For instance, having a strong opinion on a specific topic may deter you from thinking more critically, and therefore the research might end up being one-sided. It is a good idea to pick a topic in which you can provide a good argument for both sides of the societal issue.

Write: For this discussion, address the following prompts:

  • Identify a global societal issue from the following list that you would consider researching further for your Week 5 Final Paper:
    • Climate change
    • Pollution
    • Religious conflict and violence
    • Rise of artificial intelligence
    • Lack of education
    • Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity
    • Government accountability and corruption
    • Food and water security
    • International drug trafficking
    • Poverty and income inequality
  • Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
  • Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
  • Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic.
  • Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
  • Download and attach a PDF copy of one of the peer-reviewed scholarly articles that you found from the Ashford University Library to your answer using the “Attach” function located below your response.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response. Please use correct APA format when writing in-text citations (see In-Text Citation Helper” rel=”noopener”>In-Text Citation Helper (Links to an external site.)) and references (see Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.)).

Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’  posts and respond  to at least two of your peers by Day 7. In each response, provide comments on your classmate’s topic idea and ask a question that prompts your classmate to think more critically about how to explore the research topic in more detail. Each participation post should be a minimum of 75 words.

    • Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
    • I started my research process by reading over all the societal issues; I did google searches to understand each topic better. After better understanding and looking deeper into the subject, I went to the University library. I started searching each issue to see what types of information popped up. I clicked on some interesting articles and read the abstract and conclusion section to see if I wanted to learn more about and write my paper on that subject. After multiply tabs opened and going down many rabbit holes, I narrowed my ideas down to two issues. I decided to research and have my final paper be about air pollution and its effect on children, as I am majoring in Early Childhood Education.
    • Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
    • When looking at the sources you are using, you must research the sources, and when explained, they need to be factual. If the links are not up to date, this is not a reliable source. Reliable sources are reviewed by experts in the field and can be published by a university. For example, scholarly textbooks may be written out of a university resource. Also, when identifying a scholarly source, it is best to use the University library and click the “scholarly source” button to help narrow down what can be used in a paper. While doing some research on google, I found many answers to my questions but not many scholarly sources. After searching for ideas on Google, I used the university library to make sure I was looking into scholarly sources.
    • Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic.
    • Ha, Sandie. (2021). Air pollution and neurological development in children. This article explains the effects on babies in and out of the womb having to do with poor air pollution and how air pollutions play a part in the developmental complications. The article provided information and research about this issue and how studies in different areas can help determine a solution and way to get the word out.Sunyer, J. (2008). The neurological effects of air pollution in children. European Respiratory Journal, Vol. 32 (Issue 3), p535-537. https://erj.ersjournals.com/content/32/3/535 (Links to an external site.) This article explains the effects of air pollution and deficient antioxidants and how these factors have a terrible impact on children and their brain development. The article explains the effects of these deficiencies when it comes to cognitive development and behavioral issues.
    • Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
    • Scholarly sources are used in a paper to help back the research you have done and to help explain your reasoning for what the topic of your essay is and your thesis. When you use scholarly sources correctly, the reader has more of an understanding of your topic, and the academic source is backing the information you are providing in your paper. Giving your response to your thesis credibility.

    • See attached.Air Pollution.pdfThe topic that I would consider for my research topic is rise of artificial intelligence. I choose this topic because we live in a world of technology, and the more you understand how it works the easier it will be for you to adapt. The rise of AI is replacing human beings from certain required task. For instance, I have an iPhone 12 and it works like a hand held computer. The phone has certain apps on it that does the job for you for example, Siri. Siri is a virtual voice assistant, and instead of typing information on your own you can just ask Siri.
Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
Actually, the only thing I did was look at all the topics and seen which one I could mentally connect with the most. I have been educating myself on artificial intelligence for some time now; I also went on google scholar and found information that coincides with my considered topic. I have always had a huge interest in science, how things operate, the reasons and history behind it, what is the purpose and the list goes on.
Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
The first thing I would do to make sur my source is scholarly is to use the schools library, and if I use an outside site make sur it is connected with academics such as google scholar,  JSTOR, journal of medicine etc.
I would check the credentials of the author.
I will make sure the source is up to date and references to back up the source.
Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
Personally, I believe that scholarly sources need to be used because how will anyone know what I am writing about is true unless, the reader is able to confirm it. Credible sources will surely back up my research topic and claim.

Hello class

The topic that I would consider for my research topic is rise of artificial intelligence.

  • The first thing I would do to make sur my source is scholarly is to use the schools library, and if I use an outside site make sur it is connected with academics such as google scholar, JSTOR, journal of medicine etc.
  • I would check the credentials of the author.
  • I will make sure the source is up to date and references to back up the source.

Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.

Personally, I believe that scholarly sources need to be used because how will anyone know what I am writing about is true unless, the reader is able to confirm it. Credible sources will surely back up my research topic and claim.
