Ashford University Creativity and Innovation Flipped Classroom Idea Discussion

Creativity and Innovation

Educators strive to create a classroom that instills creativity and innovation. In this discussion, you will think about the creative and innovative instructional approach known as the flipped classroom (Links to an external site.) while making direct connections to the Common Core State Standards and teacher decision-making based on student assessments. Reflecting on your previous discussion on CCSS (Links to an external site.) in Week 2, you will complete the three parts of this discussion’s initial post.

There are three parts to this discussion, which are described below.

Part 1

Part 2
Now, think about assessments you have created or used in the past to address the following:

  • Discuss if a school or teacher should use a multimedia resource that is absolutely amazing in delivering both content and assessment but is not accessible.
  • Evaluate whether the resource must be excluded from a course if there are no reasonably equivalent accessible alternatives.

Part 3

  • Attach a link to your FolioLinks to an external site..
  • In one paragraph, reflect on your experience with the redesign in terms of challenges you encountered during the Week Two Assignment and how you overcame those challenges including any difficulties experienced in revising to meet the components of one ISTE-S standard (Links to an external site.) and the CCSS (Links to an external site.) (Math or English Language Arts) which are aligned with a minimum of one core subject and 21st century themes (Links to an external site.) and a minimum of one learning and innovation skill (Links to an external site.), one information, media, and technology skill (Links to an external site.), and evidence of at least one life and career skill (Links to an external site.)
  • Here is student sample:
  • Part 1
    • The flipped classroom is a teaching strategy that utilizes more online instruction such as lectures, discussions and less homework. My children learn through CCSS and I’m not sure if they use the flipped classroom strategy at their middle school, but we were told at open house that the students would not have homework unless absolutely necessary since most of the learning would occur in the classroom. I believe both can be used in conjunction to successfully teach the students within the classroom rather than sending home assignments.
    • To incorporate technology I would use a SmartBoard and laptops for each student. With the SmartBoard we could Skype other classrooms around the world to discuss different topics of learning. I would let the students access Khan Academy  on their laptops to increase their skills in the math standards that would be in conjunction with the CCSS math standards.
    • Part 2
Now, think about assessments you have created or used in the past to address the following:
    • I think teachers should used multimedia resources even when they are not accessible in the classroom. They are great tools that the students can use at home away from the classroom to practice in different domains of learning. I found one called (Edulastic ) that allows the teacher to align the instruction with the standards in their state. You can create you own questions to assess what the students know. Even if each student cant utilize this resource away from school it is a great way to assist students in learning more on the topic when he/she may need more help to understand.
    • If the resource had to be excluded from the course then I would find an alternative. I found so many great ideas for students using their cell phones in the classroom. For students without a cell phone you can pair then with someone that does or pair all the students up and use one phone for each group. You can use QR codes around the classroom as a scavenger hunt for students to complete a lesson. This is an engaging way to include technology and you don’t need an outside resource if the students have their phones.

    • I’ve still had trouble understanding the PLO’s, but after speaking to the instructor I seem to have a better understanding. That has been my most difficult challenge for week 1 and 2 assignments. I took my time looking over the P21 framework as I chose which subjects and themes to choose as well as all the other components. I wanted to make sure I had the minimum for each component of the assignment so I wrote each one down and checked it off as I completed it.
