Assignment – Denotative and Connotative Meanings
Read all the instructions before you begin.
Using any book, except a textbook, look up words on the following pages, and in the assigned position on the page (if the word in that position is a preposition or article, please move on to the next noun or verb):
page 14, second full paragraph, seventh word.
page 36, first full paragraph, tenth word.
page 53, second full paragraph, second word.
page 82, first full paragraph, third word.
page 101, second full paragraph, twelfth word.
Do not restate the instructions in your reply. Please use the numbers so it is easy to follow your responses.
- First – state the name and author of the book you used.
- Then – for each word (do one at a time – and in this order) – notate what you think the meaning is. This is not a graded item so please do not be concerned that your definition will be perfect. I want to know your definition before you look it up.
- Next add all connotations you have for the word (not possible connotations, Your connotations)
- Once you have entered what you think the meaning is, and your connotation/s, look up the word in a dictionary. You may use Google if you like. Copy and paste that definition under yours. You will see for most words that there are several definitions, and they are numbered. You can copy and paste the one that is closest to yours, but be sure to include the number of that definition.
- After you have the two definitions and your connotation/s see if you can find other connotations for that word.
