How to process a formal analysis
Look
intently at the artwork, including such elements as materials,
format, size, composition, color and texture.
Describe
Describe the artwork as if to someone who can’t see it. Organize yourobservations of all these elements into a description that is clear, logical and coherent.
Test the clarity and coherence of your description by taking turns with your partner(s) communicating and listening to the description.
Interpret
Interpret the artwork both by drawing upon the knowledge you’ve gained about Dada and considering what
meanings or intentions can be inferred from looking at the formal elements of the artwork
The presentation should identify the artist, title and date of the artwork and the specific period/phase or aspect of Surrealism it is associated with. It must be tightly organized and stay within the 10 minute limit.
