Photography:

Sally Mann

segment/”>https://art21.org/watch/art-in-the-twenty-first-century/s1/sally-mann-in-place-segment/

Prompt: In this segment we see two types of Mann’s work: her landscapes and photographs of her children. Which do you prefer and why? What do you think about the ways in which Mann has used her children in her work? How/why are Mann’s photographs of her children different from typical family photo albums? Mann also talks about “happy accidents.” What do you think she means?

Graciela Iturbide

“For me, photography is a pretext to know the world, to know life, to know yourself, and to capture everything you bring inside.” – Graciela Iturbide

Prompt: In this video segment, Iturbide and her family emphasize the importance of investigation. What kinds of investigations do they describe? How does Iturbide learn about the people and places she photographs? What does she learn? Iturbide says that the camera, or photography, is just a pretext for knowing the world. What does she come to understand or know, and what is the camera’s role in that process? Also, feel free to express you opinion on the work itself. Do you believe it is successful? Why or why not.

Video:

Mary Reid Kelly

“I was always aware of history as almost a professionalized realm, something dignified that you learned from. It was not till later that I started thinking that you could play with it.” – Mary Reid Kelly

Prompt: In Reid Kelley’s videos, 18th- and 19th-century figures and events are presented in both nonfictional and fantastical vignettes. Describe the qualities of these videos and consider the choices that Reid Kelley makes for her performances. Do you think the juxtapostion of pairing nonfiction with whimsical imagery is effective? What do you think motivates those choices? Also, Reid Kelley uses her family members to help create her art. Do you believe her work is more individualistic or collaborative? Is this important?

Alternative Media:

Ann Hamilton

Entering a work by Ann Hamilton has been described as “crossing the threshold.” What do you think this means? What role do you think the viewer plays in completing the work? Do you think her installations are contingent on the viewer? What was your favorite work by Hamilton? Choose one specific piece (installation/performance/etc) and discuss the conceptual idea behind the work. Do you think it was executed succesfully?
