Arizona State University We Have Fire Everywhere Story Summary

Please read the story by Jon Mooallem starting on page 150 of BASNW. If you do not have the BASNW book yet, you can find an online version of the article, including video footage referenced in the article.

1) Write at least a 300 word *summary of the story, https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/07/31/magazine/paradise-camp-fire-california.html

What happened to the characters, and the issue, argument, or problem at hand, which the writer hints at later in the essay. Then respond to the story. Do you know anyone affected and would you be willing to summarize their story? What parts of the story were you moved by, and why? Please cite a specific moment or two in the story. Considering that you’ve been asked to read like a writer, what writing techniques did you notice or find compelling about the way the story was written? Why?

*for your summary, assume the audience has not read the story, and you were practicing incorporating this story into a larger essay about climate change. If you are uncertain of summary writing, this will definitely be a skill we’re going to be working on, and you can see example summary and response techniques here or in your TSIS book (chapter 2/page 30)

2) Read and respond substantively to at least two peer’s writing in at least 100 words each. Please find a way to add to the discussion in ways beyond simple agreement. You can discuss causes, effects, or courses of action, based on your personal experiences or of those you know, or elaborate on particular writing techniques your peers noted that you hadn’t considered.

Objective: In arguments, it is important to have strong concrete examples illustrating the problem. It is also good to read the insight of others. Your first paper, you are going to be writing an anecdote (or series of anecdotes) that introduces your issues, and this essay is a good example.
