Arizona State University NASA Organizational Identity Discussion

Enlist the Hidden Figures characters introduced this week in our discussion. Drawing upon our sources investigate how these individuals move NASA into a new consciousness. Collaboratively:

  • Explore how your selected characters collectively disrupt former mental models through attending, suspending, and sensing this new consciousness; how NASA confronts uncertainty and ambiguity; how it learns to unwrap its “triggers, assumptions, and aversions”.
  • How do you see NASA, an organization, sense and present a new organizational identity?
  • How does it acquire a deeper collective-awareness and identity?
  • What lessons are learned from this presentation?
  • For the assignment, with your group, we will turn our attention from ourselves and individuals within an organization to the broader organization and eco-system. Through the same inquiry process we used during the week’s discussion, we will explore how NASA itself constructs an identity–as an organization and as a part of an eco-system. We will see how “mapping deep territories and sensing” can occur at the individual and the organizational level.
    • Using Silsbee and Scharmer as guides, what can you learn about the identities and presences of individuals and organizations?
    • If we are indeed an eco-system, composed of eco-structural leaders, how can we unpack this knowledge and influence the emergence of a collective and connected identity?
