Arizona State University Conflict Power and Dependency Analytical Memo

Every week indicated on the course schedule, you will be asked to turn in an Analytic Memo. Memos and discussion boards are worth a hefty 35% of the course grade. Memos encourage students to thoughtfully read the material and be prepared to contribute for class conversation. Prior to each scheduled discussion (even when it is the week you are facilitating), I will ask you to submit an Analytical Memo containing all of the following:

  1. FIVE or more substantive paragraphs summarizing the major points of the readings for the day. Memos should reframe theoretical ideas in your own words and list at least two pieces of evidence that contribute to the interpretation. Evidence connects concepts to the “real world” and/or personal experiences. (up to 5 points)
  2. WHOA/HMMM; Reflective insight on at least one aspect from the readings that you found most interesting/challenging/confusing. (up to 2 points)
  3. Answer to CH 6 “Questions for Review” #3: How do power inequalities between countries manifest at the macro-level? What are relations of economic dependency? And how might they change over time? (up to 3 points)
