Annotated Bibliography assignment

Annotated Bibliography

Now that you have selected a major question, you will turn to your own discipline to seek an answer. For this second unit, you will find three peer-reviewed journal articles from scholarly periodicals in your field. Each article should address your topic in some way. You will read those sources carefully, then write an annotation of each source—that is, a paragraph summarizing and evaluating the article.

Scholarly and professional organizations sometimes publish annotated bibliographies with the goal of helping researchers decide what sources are worth reading in more detail. Your bibliography should serve this purpose, but also will help you keep track of the research you conduct in preparation for your next assignment. In that next assignment, you will put these sources in conversation with one another and with several other sources.

In at least 200 words, each bibliography entry should include:

A full MLA citation of the source

A two- to three-sentence summary of the article

An evaluation of the article’s methods and conclusions (How did the author(s) conduct this research? What limitations does that approach have? How could the research have been made broader?)

A comparison of the source with the others you’ve read (In what way is it similar to / different from the other sources in this list?)

Once you have finished annotating your sources, add a 200-word reflective introduction to the beginning of your bibliography. In that introduction, answer:

What did you expect to find in this research? How did that differ from what you actually found?

How useful will each of these three sources be to your literature review? How do they help answer your research question?

What questions are you still left with, about the topic or about the research process?
