Directions
With the beginning of Modernism in music, and the radical innovations sonically that saw a breakaway from traditional norms, much of the mainstream audiences became alienated by the quick shift in the elements of music that resulted from the frenzy of innovation that happened in the beginning of the twentieth century. The slow dropping off of interest by the general music consuming public would result in smaller audiences for new music, as well as waning interest in the promotion and development of careers of up and coming composers. This vacuum effect pushed composers to rebel further into a realm of almost alienation of the mainstream public. Modernism largely opened the door to a creation of new music centered in the United States during the onset of World War 1 and through the years of World War 2 called “Popular Music”. The two streams that were largely parallel throughout history, now began to break apart and distance themselves from each other. This separation, saw the beginnings of Jazz, Blues, ultimately the myriad of popular music that we have at our fingertips today. Now many generations removed from the great schism, What effect did this shift from classical music as the most popular form of music in the United States to popular music have on our modern perception of classical music today? Having now been exposed to western art music (classical music), how has your perception of classical music changed from the beginning of the course to now?
