The students’ qualitative research proposal continues with the following: data collection, data analysis and letter of consent.
Thus, in undertaking the research project what processes/techniques will be used to collect data.
In discussing the processes/techniques that will be used to collect data, students must first consider access to sources of data (settings/field) and how will access to sources of data (setting/field) be obtained? Is the research project one that requires a key informant or not? Is it a covert or overt research project? (1 Mark)
What is covert versus overt research, and is the student’s research project covert or is it overt or a combination of overt and covert? Depending on the overt or covert nature of the research project, how will the data collection commenced? (1 Mark)
If the project requires a key informant – how will a key informant be obtained? (1 Mark)
After discussing how to gain access to the sources of data (setting/field), the research proposal will then discuss the chosen techniques of data collection. Data collection techniques can be one or several, including but not limited to: Ethnography and participant observation, Interviews, focus groups, and/or content analysis.
Why was one, or several data collection techniques chosen for this project? Why were others not chosen for the research project? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the selected data collection technique(s)? Why were other data collection techniques not chosen for the project? (6 Marks)

The next section of the research project is the process/techniques that students will use to analyze the data collected.
After the data collection, students will have a large amount of data to analyze. In the next section of the research proposal, students will discuss/outline the step by step strategy/process of data analysis. That is, how will students proceed to analyze (make sense) of the large amount of data collected. (6 Marks)
