Anthropology Genetics of Evolution Infographic

nstructions:

Create an infographic* that illustrates the genetics, inheritance, phenotypic expression patterns, and evolution of a heritable human trait (choose something other than eye color). Make sure to address all the following rubric prompts:

*Infographics can be created using a Microsoft Word template, a pdf template, one of the adobe creative cloud programs that the UofA provides access to (often you will need to request access, but once you do, it is free), or one of the many infographic templates that you can find online (google “infographic template”). If you have never created an infographic before you might want to check out one of the examples on our course D2L page (in the folder on the unit projects under the content tab) and/or google “evolution infographic” or “biology infographic” or “anthropology inforgraphic” etc. to get a sense for what you can create.

Submitting your infographic: if you complete your infographic and realize that you cannot download it in a format that you are able to upload into the d2l assignment, make sure that your viewing options are set to “anyone with the link can view” and then copy and paste your link into a word document. Upload that word document to the D2L assignment page.

If your infographic does not automatically generate a similarity score in Turnitin, make sure to copy and paste all of the text from your infographic into a word document and submit that as supplementary material. Name the file: text from infographic (or something similar).

**Remember to phrase ideas IN YOUR OWN WORDS to avoid plagiarism (a form of academic misconduct that can stay on your transcript forever) and demonstrate your understanding of the topic. If you use a source to find the information you are writing about, cite it just after the information in the body of your project (author, year) AND copy the complete reference in to your reference section (review avoiding plagiarism section near the top of the bi-weekly project assignments document if you have not already)

Examples of evolutionarily interesting traits in humans: (either because they distinguish humans from other nonhuman primates or because they have evolved recently within humans)

  • Lactose tolerance
  • Skin color
  • Resistance to malaria
  • Personality traits
  • Height/stature
  • Lifespan
  • Long juvenile periods/childhoods
  • Body hair
  • Traits associated with speech and language
  • Brain size
  • Traits associated with posture and locomotion
  • Cryptic ovulation
  • Thumb size, strength, opposability, and/or dexterity
  • The white sclera on/in human eyeballs
  • Shapes and sizes of teeth (choose one type- incisors, molars, premolars, canines)
  • Small large intestines
