Culture is how we live, how we perceive the world around us. Culture directs our decisions, our emotions, and our interpersonal relations. Culture is constructed. It differs from society to society. We broke this idea down into four topics over the last month:1) politics andreligion, 2) subsistence and economics, 3) language and the arts, and 4) kinship and descent.
The exam question – Pick two of these topics (two different topics) and use descriptive material to illustrate how culture is expressed in the topic area.
The descriptive material can come from your own life, from what is in our course book, from the lectures or from the movies clips we have seen. The descriptive material could come from religious services and beliefs; or from ethnic or national identity; or the words and phrases in your job, your cultural group or words that keep up with technological advances. Other kinds of descriptive material might be the significance of wealth or aspirations to achieve wealth; or the ways people deal with poverty. Or descriptivematerial come from your family; the artistic expression in the clothes you wear or the music we listen to; theuse of drugs or alcohol; where you spend the weekend evenings; or the political contests and leadership struggles all around us.Perhaps you could write about weddings, or family gatherings, or even tattoos.Fully describe the descriptive material so it comes out to about 300 words for each of the two topics.
There is no right or wrong answer.
Feel free to use visual images (photos) or audio tapes to enhance your description.
And do not leave this until the last minute.Start today. For some it may be helpful to see the lectures again
