Part One – Researching the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida (the inspiration for The Nickel Boys).
The author of The Nickel Boys, Colson Whitehead, was inspired to write The Nickel Boys after he found out about The Dozier School for Boys, a school located in Marianna, Florida, which was supposed to be a reform school but was later found out to be a place of misery, injustice, terror and a place of death for many young boys who were confined to the school.
For this assignment, you will do an online research on The Dozier School for Boys. You might start your search by looking at the end of The Nickel Boys (in Acknowledgments), where Colson Whitehead lists the places where he did his research (like the Tampa Bay Times and The University of Florida’s forensic report of the grounds where The Dozier School for Boys used to stand). You might also conduct a search on YouTube, where you can find interviews of Colson Whitehead, as well as former residents of The Dozier School for Boys. This is your research project, so you can choose how and where you conduct your research.
Part Two – The Results of Your Research (Posting what you found through your research).
After you have collected your research materials, you should post what you discovered through your research on Discussion Board. Your posting should be at least two paragraphs long.
