Possible Essay Questions (Part C)
Your recitation instructor will select four of these essay questions for the second part of the exam – you will write responses to three of the questions (you will not need to write about all four). Your answers to the essay questions MUST be your individual and original work.
- You recently presented an argument advocacy speech and listened to advocacy speeches from fellow students. In light of those speeches and what COMM 114 has featured, explain four things that you think are important aspects of being a competent advocate.
- During the Pandemic people are using on-line “dating” sites like Bumble, Tinder, OKCupid, Hinge, and Coffee Meets Bagel. A friend is considering participating in one of these dating sites and has asked your advice. Present ONE argument for participating in an on-line dating site and present ONE argument against participation. Explain WHY you would present these arguments for and against and HOW they would relate to your friend.
- A friend of yours has become very concerned about issues of human rights and social justice and has joined a campus social justice organization. Your friend knows that you have studied argument and persuasion and has asked you for advice about how to conduct research on human rights and social justice. Your friend wants to join the speakers’ team for this organization but does not feel well prepared. What would you tell your friend about how to research and prepare to argue persuasively and effectively? Explain.
- You have been asked to give a public speech at your former high school, at a church you have attended, or at a community center in your home town. The host asks you to speak on a current event: immigration, climate change, or health care.
- Select one of those settings.
- Select one of the topics and discuss what your overall proposition would be and why.
