Consider animism as it shows up in indigenous religions, monotheistic “world religions,” and secular spaces. Then watch the video by researcher John Reid (2014) on the importance of animism. First, explain the examples provided by Dr. Reid about how animism is actually communicating experience of a belief rather than just the belief. Second, describe what is being animated in Dr. Reid’s examples and explain the animation. Finally, pull-out at least two examples from your life (e.g. monotheistic religions that use animism; dog as member of the family; talking to traffic lights; etc.) and explain how these two examples illustrate experience of a belief and/or the animating of something.
