This is a two-part assignment. Please take several days to do the assignment before you write your responses.
Part 1 – Choose a person, preferably someone you see every day. Without letting him/her know, pay close attention to his/her nonverbal behavior over a couple of days. Try to identify how he/she uses body language (posture, gestures, facial expressions, etc.). Is the person non-expressive or highly expressive? Do you think his/her nonverbal behavior is consistent with his/her verbal behavior? Were you able to decipher moods or feelings when there was no conversation? Along with answering the above questions, did you notice anything you had never noticed before, by paying closer attention?
Part 2 – Chose a close friend, family member, or coworker, and ask him/her to describe your nonverbal communication, how he/she knows when you are feeling each of the following emotions, and write his/her responses:
Anger or irriation
Boredom or indifference
Happiness
Sadness
Worry or anxiety
Looking at the above feelings, write about times when you use specific nonverbal behaviors to convey the emotion to get attention, sympathy, or reward from someone.
Write about what nonverbal behaviors you use when you are trying to influence or deceive someone.
