Prompt
We are now going to create an imaginary sequel to the book, using its same characters and events as parameters for our next long essay assignment.
Imagine that Ayoola has been arrested and charged with the murder of two of her boyfriends, Femi and Gboyega. You have now been hired as her defense attorney. Your task is to prepare a written statement for the jury that articulates your legal team’s defense against those charges.
The judge has ruled that she will permit you to present evidence from the defendant’s life, including her childhood, that might be relevant to the charge.
Audience
Is your audience is a courtroom jury of Ayoola’s peers.
Purpose
Using the text of My Sister, the Serial Killer, your task is to write an argumentative statement that persuades the jury that Ayoola is not guilty of murder.
Requirements
You must quote from the book.
Your argument regarding what happened cannot deviate from any known facts in the book. For example, you can’t argue that the men didn’t die.
You may incorporate outside sources that you believe strengthen you case, but outside sources are not required.
Both the rough draft and the final draft must follow MLA and class formatting requirements.
Process
This essay will have a relatively simple writing process.
The final draft will be worth 200 points. It must reach the minimum length requirement for the assignment to be eligible for a grade.
