American Public University System Week 2 Forum Exercises

For your initial post, choose one of the prompts below. The initial response and follow up posts should be developed, and supported with information from the assigned course materials. It is a requirement that you incorporate the assigned course materials and indicate which ones you are using to construct the post (informal citations are fine, as in “In our lecture this week,” or “As stated in the primary source letter of de Busbecq…”, just something to indicate where your information is coming from). Note that each initial post carries with it the additional requirement to quote a specific passage (this means to literally copy and paste, word for word, using quotation marks) from the primary source (firsthand account from history) linked or attached to your prompt, and to discuss it. For those who choose prompt 1 this week, where there is no text, you will tell us the name of your image, briefly describe it, and tell us how it supports your argument.

There are no points awarded for use of outside sources. There will be point deductions for the use of such lower-tier sources as encyclopedias, blogs, or dictionaries.

The follow up query from your instructor, and your own peer posts, may be about any aspect of the readings or lecture materials.

1. Choose 1 primary source image from this website: Slavery Images: A Visual Record of the African Slave Trade. Describe what is in the picture. What does this image tell us about the Atlantic Slave Trade? After discussing your image, please discuss the origins of the Atlantic Slave Trade and the impact Europeans had on Africa. For this second half of the post, the readings from week 1 ( Maddison; Ehret; A Brief Overview of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade) or the lecture material (Introduction to the Age of Exploration; “Transatlantic Slavery Documentary”) should be used. Clearly state your sources at the point of use.
