HIST – Questions in American History to the Civil War

I. The Analytical Paper

The final assignment for the class is a 4-5 page (plus bibliography) analytical paper on a historical question of relevance to the time period under consideration. It requires that you do some research and develop a well-defined and well-supported argument based on factual evidence and sound, logical analysis.

You have already been developing your paper through your consideration of sources over the first few weeks of the session. You should use the sources you chose for your Research Bibliography as comprehensively as possible. Consider discussing any additional outside sources with Prof. Kovalesky either after class or during office hours to ensure that it is appropriate for this assignment.

Here are the formatting guidelines for your Analytical Paper. I look forward to reading your work:

Length: 4-5 pages (make sure that your paper is at least 4 full pages long) double-spaced, plus bibliography (not included in your page count).

Citations: Please cite your sources and format your bibliography following either Chicago style or MLA style (I am not concerned about page formatting according to a specific style, just your references). You do not have to cite information you got from lecture.

Here are some important points you should address in your analytical paper (we will discuss this in more detail during our live class meetings):

-Why is your question important to our consideration of U.S. History?

-What is your argument about this question?

-How have historians addressed the question to this point?

-What is the historical context behind this question?

-Who are the stakeholders affected by this topic and question?
