This writing assignment will connect two concepts developed by the pieces we’ve read thus far. The two concepts that you will focus on for this writing assignment will be the Division of Labor developed by Adam Smith and Alienation developed by Karl Marx.
You should already have a solid understanding of the Division of Labor (DOL) from Homework 1. The reading on Alienation discusses four types of Alienation: (i)Alienation in the labour process (ii) Alienation from products (iii) Alienation from others (iv) and Alienation from our humanity. In 2-3 pages describe how the Division of Labor exacer- bates or mediates the intensity of alienation. This will involve briefly summarizing the Division of Labor and fully explaining your reasoning for its impact on at AT LEAST TWO types of alienation.
Example of the structure
- Thesis Statement – DOL increases or decreases alienation in the labour process, alienation from others etc.
- Describe the 2 or more types of alienation you are focusing on and explain how they manifest
- Argue for a causal affect of the DOL on Alienation (i.e. the DOL causes an increase in alienation in the labour process by…) and fully justify the argument
