Differentiating between genres:
The two articles given in the course readings have different genres and are distinct in various aspects. After reading the article, Navigating Genre has explained the content accustomed to its title. The author, Dirk, elaborated on Blitzer’s statement about the genre. The author was of the point that response has an important place in the actions and the communication. For example, if something happens, it will require a response to compensate, and if something new happens, another response is required. The previous response will take a new position, and a new genre will be developed. The author has explained that the genre has certain features that keep on changing, and it has been found that the changing features do not let anyone get expertise in communication, writing, or speaking of the specific genre. There has always been a certain room to improve in the particular genre. The explanation of genre is linked to the discourse communities because they deal with the communicative aspect. The responses are interlinked, and while mentioning the new responses, the previous responses must be cited. It has been explained in one of the articles, the discussion in the other is different.
Networking via LinkedIn: An examination of usage and career benefits was the second article to be discussed. It has majorly focused on the use of LinkedIn for communication and the discourse communities in genres. The first aspect that was being discussed in the article was the professional use of LinkedIn. The second aspect was the use of LinkedIn for career growth and how the professionals can use it for a good reason. Moving on, statistical data has been given as well to elaborate on the benefits of networking. The last aspect was to discuss the statistical analysis of lab reports of LinkedIn self-reports. Coming towards the genre discussion, the main topic and content of the article meets the definition of genre presented by Dirk. (Dirk 2010) said that genre is the power to encourage or discourage people’s interaction, to promote or demote the communication and sometimes it helps and discourage others from speaking. Similarly, the article has explained the genre concerning LinkedIn use. It connects with others and provides a platform to users to define their boundaries and contact people across the globe (Davis, 2020).
