For this assignment you may only write about Racial Inequities in New York City Parole OR Jails and Inmates Experience. In the guidelines I say not to simply include a slew of numbers from the readings. You must paraphrase the findings in your own words. I do not want a lot of statistics; instead I want you to describe the statistics and say what they mean.
The assignment is for a four or five page paper that must be divided in two distinct parts. It must include a summary of the reading assignment and a thesis statement, and must develop an idea. More detailed guidelines will be made available early in the semester.
You must save this paper as a Microsoft Word or PDF document and uploaded it on our Blackboard site. You go to “Assignments”, choose Response Paper #1, Attach File, and Browse Computer. Improperly uploaded work will not be graded.
Please choose EITHER the Racial Inequities New York Parole Supervision article OR the Jails and Inmate Experience chapter to write about. You may only write about ONE chapter or article. Your paper must briefly summarize a reading of your choice and explore your own thoughts and ideas in response to it. The essays must be written in 12-point font, using standard margins, and double- spaced. Each assignment must be a total of four pages
The first section needs to be labeled: Section 1: Summary. Please clearly label following these instructions. You should write a two summary of the reading selections, stating the title and author, the general topic, the main argument, and a brief description of the body of the reading. This section will be graded on thoroughness and accuracy. When you summarize these readings, please paraphrase statistics. DO NOT INCLUDE NUMBERS. In your own words describe them. For instance, use words like “most” or “the majority”, or “less than half”.
Your second section needs to be labeled: Section II: Discussion. This is part of the same assignment and should follow your summary in the same document. You are only uploading one file. In this section you should write a two-page discussion of an issue raised by the readings and your thoughts on it. This should focus on the reading itself. YOU MUST HAVE A THESIS STATEMENT. Please have your thesis statement in bold or italics so I can clearly see it. This is an argument you are making about the reading or about the issue you chose to write about. It should not be a restatement of the author’s argument; you’re making own argument about it. You will lose points if your statement doesn’t make a clear argument. You discussion should not be a continuation of the summary. Think about what is important in the reading and what you want to say about it. Please focus on the reading selection and issues discussed in class and do not use outside sources (you will lose points if you use outside sources and may receive zero if you do not submit original work in your own words).
