This week’s discussion will consist of reading Chapter 11 and using an assessment tool that measures violence related attitudes, behaviors, and influences among youth. This tool can be found at the following link courtesy of centers for disease control and prevention (CDC):
http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/yv_compendium.pdf
Turn to page 23/373 (in case your page # doesn’t align the same it should read, SCALES AND ASSESSMENTS A1. Normative Beliefs about Aggression) . Only use the first measurement tool consisting of 20 questions. Determine the results by scoring accordingly. In your post discuss your findings with the class. Don’t forget to include your reaction to the findings and ways you would approach this client based on the findings. If you are not able to utilize this tool with a (youth only) client in a practice setting, employ another youth to assist you with the assignment. If you aren’t working with clients at all, a family member or friend will suffice. When asking your “client” to volunteer please simplify the process for him/her by reassuring the client that these questions are straight forward and used to get a sense of how he/she interprets beliefs about aggression. If the client perceives his/her safety as being at risk, do not proceed.
Remember, we’re interested in learning more about how young people perceive the topic of violence and how you, counselors in-training would approach them 1:1. If you are interested/have extra time, feel free to ask additional test items from other sections in the compendium. I think you’ll find that the results will be unexpected and result in you approaching your clients differently. (I did this myself with a younger cousin since I only work with the adult population and was saddened to learn just how acceptable various acts of violence are among 15 yr old boys).
