Please review scenario number four in your Bailey and Burch book, on p. 337. Utilizing the content of that scenario, please answer the following questions utilizing part two of your model for ethical decision making:
- What solutions have you evaluated?
- Describe how you considered the following factors in evaluating your solutions: honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness and compassion.
- What issues, conflicts or tensions might potentially influence each solution (include discussion of your biases and personality features as well)?
- What do you do if there are no acceptable solutions? Do you need to go back and brainstorm other possibilities?
- If you make a decision, how do you implement it with fidelity?
- How and where should you document all actions taken?
- Kevin continues to bang his head when attempting to seek attention from his parents and teachers. The following approaches have been implemented: sensory integration recommended by the occupational therapist, deep pres-sure, joint compression, and jumping on a trampoline.
- Kevin continues to bang his head. Sign language was rec-ommended by the speech therapist: Kevin is unable to discriminate between the signs; therefore he continues to bang his head. The use of a helmet was recommended by the physical therapist. Kevin continues to bang his head with the helmet, and he has now begun to bite his fingers. The behavior specialist has now recommended shock ther-apy, after reviewing all the interventions, or medication. Is it ethical to use an aversive strategy at this point? How long should interventions continue to be in place before medication or shock therapy is considered?Hint: How do you know attention is a reinforcer? And remember to say, “Show me the data!
