Read the assigned readings as indicated in the syllabus for week three.
We are going to change up the discussion this week to reflect the current state of world affairs. The previous discussion prompt for this week was written well before COVID-19 and focused on a theoretical exposure to Ebola. The discussion centered on what exactly the government could and could not do to restrict individual freedoms in the event of a panademic disease threat.
Here we are today and we have seen things put in place throughout the country that contradict most of the conventional thought of what would and would not be permitted by the citizenry and put in place by the government in a pandemic situation.
Every state in the country is under some sort of isolation order. The economy is basically shut down as a result of sequential shut downs at the state level.
Paddle boarders are being arrested for violating social distancing when they come back on the beach. Churches are being restricted from providing services and the courts have already weighed in unconstitutionality of the practice. Closures of business deemed “non-essential” in one community are essential in others.
What are your thoughts on what is going on? Is the need to “flatten the curve” a higher priority than individual liberties? What is the appropriate mix between providing for the public safety and protecting individual liberties?
