I have included a guide to formal analysis that summarizes information covered in Ch. 1 – 5 and the videos that will help you complete your essays. All of the artworks are featured in Ch.1 – 5 and you will be able to find more information about the works in your book.
**PLEASE do not write artist biographies or histories of the artworks—you should be writing about what you see and the information provided in the textbook.**
Compare and contrast two artworks.
You will select ONE set of artworks to compare and contrast. You will format your essay as follows:
Paragraph 1 (3-5 sentences): Title and artist of both of the works you will be discussing. Initial impression of the subject matter.
Paragraph 2 (3-5 sentences): Discuss artwork 1 including information about the material used, medium, composition, 2D or 3D, size/scale, figures in the work; representation/nonrepresentational; colors, etc.
Paragraph 3 (3-5 sentences): Discuss artwork 2 including information about the material used, medium, composition, 2D or 3D, size/scale, figures in the work; representation/nonrepresentational; colors, etc.
Paragraph 4 (3-5 sentences): What do the two artworks have in common? How do they differ? Think about the kind of mood they might invoke, how the viewer may relate to the work, etc.
Paragraph 5 (3-5 sentences): Which artwork do you prefer? Why or why not? If you don’t like either of the artworks, why? (This is your opinion but should be informed by formal elements. For example, don’t say “I don’t like because it’s ugly” but rather say “I find it ugly because the figures are roughly drawn.”)
**PLEASE continue to the next TWO pages to review the photo sets that you can select from.**
**Students MUST write about these artworks only**
**DO NOT MIX the artworks in the sets**
